I regularly attend AAO as it brings all of ophthalmology together at one meeting. You can decide on the exact topic/s where you require further education and it’s very likely that there will be a course that meets your needs, in each and every sub-speciality of ophthalmology. It’s a great place to meet up with US and international colleagues and an ideal venue for medical advisory and editorial board meetings as so many are already there. Talk about AAO from a European perspective From a European perspective it’s less likely that you are going to encounter a technology that is completely novel as most of these appear in Europe before they do in the US but it’s always interesting to learn from our US colleagues how they adopt these new technologies into their practices. I have always been of the impression that our colleagues across the Atlantic are particularly good at marketing and improving patient experiences. The sub-specialty days are particularly good and once you have registered for one, you have access to all the others on the same day What else are you enjoying at the meeting? The exhibit hall sees a great collection of industry exhibits. The social programme around the meeting is also one of the highlights for me and every night represents an opportunity to catch up with old friends and make new friends over dinner. Often this is where the real learning and education occurs for many of us.
